Self Reflection on Group Entry: Jonas Chlamydomonas (Behind the Scenes)

Name and Section: Henry Medina Jr. IV-Electron Date: February 28, 2010
Type of Portfolio Entry: Storybook Development
Title / Subject: Jonas Chlamydomonas (Behind the Scenes)

I chose this because making the storybook was probably one of the hardest parts of life science for me, and I'm sure for a whole lot of people. But it was certainly fun to see the finished product and reading other people's storybooks!

I really liked the conceptualization part of the project because it allowed us to go wild (to a certain extent) with the ideas we had. Although I really do not enjoy all the work involved in drawing the storybook and coloring it. None of us knew how to photoshop so our group had to do most of it manually and just add the text through word.

I know I could have improved on the quality of drawing and coloring of the art but I really am poor at drawing and coloring. If I knew how to photoshop, then maybe I could have done a better job at making it. Communication between us 3 was hard too considering Josh had STR to do (since their group had a mishap and had to do a BIG part of the subject over again) while Patrick was a dormer and lived far away.

I learned from this that Bio isn't really just a subject for high schoolers and beyond. I also learned that some concepts in Biology (such as mutualism and other forms of symbiosis) manifest in many ways in the human society (especially parasitism haha). Also, that Biology can be taught to others in a much simpler and watered down way. I guess that among the three, I consider the 1st one to be the most important. I've heard many people say that Biology isn't important to them either because they're too old or too young for it. I say that it's important and that age shouldn't matter. If you love it, you love it. If you hate, you hate it. But the fact remains, it's here for all of us whether we're aware or not. It's everything because it is life.

From the activity and the portfolio, I learned that learning is the thing that keeps us humans from doing things in one go. This project also makes it evident that we learn from the people we work with and even the people who see our work. The last one is very important for me because I'm not the type of person who receives much feedback from others. For some reason, I get a lot of feedback from my parents but not my friends. I wish that my friends would comment more about me and my work so that I'll know how to improve.

For the next batches of life sci: Plan a WHOLE LOT ahead and learn how to draw using your computer! Oh and don't forget to have fun!

Confessions and Realizations of a Crossdresser-Advantages of Human Homosexuality
Title / Subject: Essay

I decided to put this because for me, this is a frustrated essay and entry. I really had a lot of plans for this but it was too hard to put into words. Let's say that the feeling is different :>.

The thing that I liked the most doing this essay, would ironically be the thing I dislike about it the most too: the data gathering portion. Basically, I gathered data from the life sci powerpoints and our values education lesson during 2nd year (Mrs. Sarmago) supplemented by the 2 instances in my life when I cross-dressed: first year and fourth year. It was a good/bad experience for me but definitely something new!

Maybe I should have put in more supporting facts, but then again it would be hard to justify me not being gay. Oh and maybe I should cross-dress more...

For me, I realized that in Biology norms really aren't followed not only by chance, but also for a reason. It made me think that maybe deviating from the standard can allow for advantages unheard of! Oh and a bit of "homosexuality is viable in biology". I guess that the "trying something new and deviating from standard" is the most important lesson here for me. If our ancestors never evolved we won't be here! We only got here because of a combination of luck and their deviation from the rest of the species in the world in the race for survival. The more unique, possibly the better.

I can learn from things that society would normally condemn/discriminate. I can also learn from the most unusual of things and even from things from our daily lives. Some information here, I managed to obtain from observation of people I know who are homosexual. It really is surprising that when you think you're free from academics, you're actually learning. You can be in an area just watching people, but you're learning new things like math, psychology even a bit of practical biology and physics. You can't escape it!

If someone else wants to do something like this, well maybe I'll tell them to do more "INFO GATHERING". And possibly interview people they know to be homosexuals, of course in a non-offensive, purely scientific, non-discriminatory way.

Self Reflection on Entry 2: Beauty, As You See It

Name and Section: Henry Medina Jr. IV-Electron Date: Feb 28, 2010
Type of Portfolio Entry: Survey+Analysis
Title / Subject: Beauty, As You See It

I chose this portfolio entry because it was the only one that didn't involve completely what I thought about. This portfolio entry also contains thoughts and feelings of other people around me about one of the most desired traits of the entire human race: beauty.

I had fun making this entry because I went around the school during breaks to talk to classmates and teachers about their own point of view regarding beauty. It was fun and I got to hear their side so I consider it really worthwhile. I really enjoyed listening to what they said and a few of them (ahem sir!) made me laugh a lot! Haha, it also gave me a sort of "peek" into what kind of people they are.

If I had to complain about one thing regarding this project, it would be that it required a lot of walking around the school looking for people I want to (and WILLING to be) interview.

I really wish I was able to get more people to talk to about it though, but then I realized that if I added more, it might make analysis a lot harder. Not to mention that I had other requirements due almost the same time so I had to make do with what I had.

Beauty really is variable, most especially if you're talking to people from science schools. You also cannot judge someone's beauty value because it really is based on the person's attitude and perspective, much like many issues in biology and other sciences. Lastly, I learned that Bio can be applied to even trivial stuff like these ("trivial" but very much wanted :D, I admit haha). It really makes evident that perspective really does count. I remember during 2nd year that Sir Espinas mentioned things about the probable means of formation of Earth and the many scientists debating on it. Honestly, I couldn't understand all those back then (probably even now), but I kept on thinking why can't get agree on which one if they have facts? Well, I do realize now that even if one has facts, every argument always has bias, especially on stuff like beauty and others where person's perspective (compared to facts), have a more solid foundation.

From this I also got that learning can be: done spontaneously in a FUN manner, in many forms, a sharing of ideas on many things between teacher-student and friends. Honestly though I enjoy reading some textbooks, there are certain topics and subjects I'd rather not touch. But then learning becomes a lot easier on the "fun meter" of life when you're with someone... in a non-classroom setting! That way, it becomes integrated into what you assume to be the "normal way" of life.

I really suggest using more people as subjects and starting a lot earlier for the next batches of students if ever someone wants to use something like this. It's fun yes but very much time consuming.

Self Reflection on Entry 1: Break Time Songs About Bio!

Name and Section: Henry Medina Jr. IV-Electron Date: February 28, 2010
Type of Portfolio Entry: Song Lyrics (adaptation)
Title / Subject: Break Time Songs About Bio!

I selected this portfolio entry among my other ones simply because it is the one I enjoyed the most doing. I guess it can also kind of surprise people who don't know me because they might think I'm not the type to do this thing. I don't really talk a lot unless necessary but sometimes I get fits of craziness when I have to let all of my ideas flow and go.

The song I used was one of my personal OPM favorites ("Huling El Bimbo" by Eraserheads) and I really enjoyed listening to it over and over again just to see what lyrics wound fit in. Surprisingly, it was easy to do since I made most of the stuff up while going home. I was trying to sleep in our van when suddenly I remembered I had a portfolio entry due the next week so I started thinking of stuff and it hit me. The lyrics flowed easily enough and I just had to change a few when I got home. I really enjoyed making this one compared to my other 2 entries during the 1st semester.

Although I said all that, I really wish I could have sung this one! Or maybe made the lyrics fit in more, because there are some parts that are kind of off. I am happy about my work though generally. Just could have been happier.

Well, from going over this lesson, it really sunk into me that the evolutionary theory really does have some flaws since it was made by people who have coherent but not exactly the same beliefs. I also learned from it that all these people contributed something to the theory we generally contribute only to one man, Darwin (there were some that I only knew now, but most were already known to me). Lastly, I guess I learned that Evolution, as a theory, is still evolving too. I believe the last to be the most important because it makes clear to us that nothing is permanent nor perfect. We can always improve on things and things that may be "correct" now, can be considered false or perhaps insufficient in the future. We are only human thus we do not know anything. But this trait of not knowing allows us to grow.

I also got a few extra lessons from making this entry: learning can be really fun; you can make your own adaptive techniques to learn; learning something properly means that you can mold it into any shape or form you desire. I believe the last one to be most important too. Well, I did read up a lot on this topic and I have past lessons backing up my newly learned ones so I guess I got it covered well enough. I was able to mold what I knew into a song that I can probably use to entertain and teach other people. This is important because that is the essence of learning, applying what you learn.

For all those 2011 or batches to come who want to do something like this... Make sure you sing it! :) It's fun but also remember that if you make it, you gotta be prepared to perform it!

Group Entry : Jonas Chlamydomonas (Behind The Scenes)

The Story Behind the Story Book

Our storybook, “Jonas Chlamydomonas” is a story about one who believes that one can survive alone, or rather used to believe. This story is derived from the common story of a boy, called Jonas, who believed that he was good enough to live on his own with minimal help from his peers of the same age. At a young age, Jonas was left in the care of his grandparents most of the time due to his parents’ respective jobs.

This childhood familiarity of not having the parents around at times, but mostly with sister and younger cousin, instilled within Jonas a sense of desire to become independent. He walked up and down stairs alone unaided, eventually leading to the scar on his eyebrow area visible until this day. Still, it wasn’t until much later that he would become much more distrusting of his peers.

When he reached kindergarten, a simple event of winning in a class game led to one of his classmates telling the rest not to play with him because Jonas won. Jonas was extremely confused by this behaviour of his ”friend” and so got into a sort of fight with him. Jonas was also rejected by the first girl he ever liked with this word: “che!”. At a tender age of around 4-5, Jonas had already been ganged up upon, betrayed by “friends” and rejected by the prettiest girl in his class, not really a good start if you ask me.

Growing up, Jonas started to trust in his abilities more than relying on others. True, it made him competitive, always desiring to be better than the others. It also made him somewhat of an outcast. And still he continued to distrust others. His cousin once traded his toy for another toy in (his cousin’s) school, something Jonas did not really appreciate. A couple of street kids forced sand into his mouth when he was a kid. His own sister pulled a prank at him and put powder inside his mouth. He was also shoved into a pool by two kids younger than him. Yes, Jonas was kind of the unlucky kid huh, but he was to an extent, determined to become better.

When he reached grade school, Jonas was shocked by the rapid change in his environment that he tried to rely on himself even more. From a sort of day-care kindergarten of less than 30 people in his class (only 1 class), which was only a few streets away from his house to a large private school with pre-school, grade school and high school students, located in another city! Yes it was a massive change for him, the poor kid. He got lost during the first day and ended up in the parking lot of the school... He also met several children who bullied him, increasing his distrust even more.

This continued for several years. Although he became more open to others in a way and made friends, he still distrusted most of the people around him. He came to recognize that he was surrounded by a lot of arrogant and proud people and so he generalized even those who were kind under the type of people he’d avoid. To counter the bad attitude of some of his peers, he became somewhat aggressive and impulsive. He reported many things to the teacher, incurring the wrath of several of his classmates. He was strict and unwavering, earning him a bad reputation in the batch as the kill joy. He also got into arguments even with people twice his size or with many friends who would slug him. Luckily, he only got hit a few times, most of the time though, it ended in shouting matches. During breaks he would spend time going around alone, being only slightly envious of his batch mates. He wanted to be the best, and he sacrificed his social life for it.

Pathetic as he may seem, he only ever wanted to make his parents proud and for others to like him. He knew what he did was the right thing but it always got him in trouble with his classmates. He was disliked for doing what he believed in and teased for being too square. So yes, he was utterly frustrated and this fuelled his determination even more. He graduated from grade school only a little less anti-social and square than before, thanks to the help of some close friends.

His turning point came in his high school. Yes, he was pretty much the same arrogant and selfish kid during the first few days, but later on this hard shell was destroyed. It pretty much took the realization that he could never be the best and that there were nice people around too. He met a great set of friends who stayed by him and met far nicer people in his new school compared to his old one. Eventually, his hard external wall crumbled.

Jonas is still struggling to completely move forward. Until recently, he has completely changed into a new and improved individual, but a recent event cause his hard shell to return slowly. In making this story book, Jonas hopes that he can help other children and even himself realize he truly needs others. :)

Symbolisms:
Predators: bullies and problems that haunt you
Turning into colonies: forming rings of friends, sometimes cliques that become harder to break up as they get to know each other more
Jonas Chlamydomonas: Jonas, the boy
Miko Mikrobiyo: the bullies...
Microscopic world: We are all small in this world, but we can have a great impact on the macroscopic scale (like how small microorganisms can affect humans, plants, animals, nature etc.)
Growing larger of Jonas: becoming stronger but harder to work with (or fuse with in this case)
SA:V ratio: the better one gets, the more effort needed to maintain and improve, it becomes easier if one works with others
Jonas: me

So.... we later realized that the story was a wee-bit flawed (okay fine, really flawed), so we (Josh Malapit and Patrick Go) changed some stuff for the final submission.
Changes:
Miko has been deleted O:
So Jonas is really just an arrogant kid.
Other than that, nothing much changed.
The drawing style did though.
And we also added a scene where Jonas' arrogance made his classmate cry, thus turning everyone against Jonas. It's a story development technique in order to raise the girl's reputation and positive karma in the story since she saves him in the end despite his attitude towards her.

There are people who are too arrogant. Yep there are, but the only way to get to them is through being kind. -Good Moral

Oh and many thanks to Ms. Joanna Perez and Courtney Mathay for helping us color our work! (if someone else helped, I'm sorry if I forgot, kindly comment and thank you :D).

Tidbits:
This was used to be called: "V is for Volvox"
but then the title didn't sound very child-friendly so we scrapped it.
We also had another ide while brainstorming for this story and here it is:

The Emo Mayfly
-about the short and sad life of a male mayfly (roughly 24 hours).
-the protagonist is a pessimist who was sad and depressed all his lifetime (24 hours XD)
-the others around him simply buzzed around eating and preparing for mating because of their instinct.
-the protagonist was born with a sense of being (it IS a children's story book!)
-the protagonist complains to other insects/animals/plants about its plight.
-only to realize too late that he was sad all his life
-he realized he should have lived those 24 hours to the fullest because it was his only life, however short.

:D
Patrick's joke: The mayfly uses the structures on its hands to cut (then again it won't be allowed to children's storybooks...)

We are proud of our project :)
Many thanks to everyone who helped us!
And to God for giving us a longer life span than Mayflies!

Contribution:
-Story, Artwork of most of the pages and some coloring.

Self Entry 3: Confessions and Realizations of a Cross Dresser-Advantages of Human Homosexuality

Babae po ako. Mali ka diyan sa inaakala mo, hindi ako gay, lalong di likha ng iyong imahinasyon, babae po ako!

Okay, so I admit that I crossed dressed for a Life Science report regarding sex change. It was an interesting topic, especially how the animals use sex change in order to take advantage of each other in this race called life. For us humans, that’s not really biologically possible at the whim of the moment but in terms of acting and mental state, it is possible.

In a way, sex change for us that may prove to be advantageous would be the sex change involving mindset only. Although seemingly useless for many people who are straight and even sad for those who are ultra-conservatives, acting gay from time to time has some merits. I am saying this out of my own perspective and opinion coming from the short time that I became an “open gay” during life sci acting.

For example: sex change in animals allows them to reduce costs, example: being a male is easier than being a female. This is somewhat analogous to females dressing up as males (lesbians). Male clothing is mostly cheaper and get used more often than female clothing, thus the lesbian tends to spend less. Tendencies to over indulge in shopping also decrease due to less interest in clothes. Who says that being a guy didn’t have its advantages?

Another example: some fishes tend to remain females in the presence of a dominant male in order to reduce competition. In a way, being a “gay” person can indeed cause people to hate you, but also decreases your chances of getting hurt. The tendency of gays in human society is to be surrounded by female friends, and males who are after these females do not go against the gays in fear of incurring the scorn of their targeted females. This helps provide a sort of barrier around the gay person, which that person, especially is physically lacking, cannot provide on his own.

Yet another example would be the adaptation to stress in terms of enviroment. The jack-in-the-pulpit plant changes gender whenever it is incapable of responding properly to the stress in the environment. Certain people, when in under a large amount of emotional stress, become more prone to identity crisis as an adaptation. Some people, in order to relieve stress, pretend to be gay/lesbian in order to vent off excess stress in a new way. The act of pretending to be homosexual is very amusing (take it from a first-hand source) and somewhat relieving.

Although truth be told it was fun to act as a gay for a short while. It helped relieve me of stress by venting out all the negative emotions within me in an amusing way. The clothes were also very much comfortable and the things suppressed as males can be said with relative ease. Not to mention it was pretty easy and comfortable to move around in those. You also manage to attract the attention and amuse people you may want to amuse for whatever reason.

Yes, homosexuality is a viable mental, social and emotional adaptation for us humans. Physically changing one’s body is not very much advisable but simply altering the mental state and preference of one’s self to suit the needs is very much quite achievable. It is a method of acquiring a new way to release stress and a new way to interact with others. A blend of both genders will allow one to make use of advantages that each side has although not all are available to them, especially biologically related ones.

Self Entry 2: Beauty, As You See It

Four Students and two teachers from Philippine Science High School were interviewed on their views regarding beauty, both physical and not, and how they perceive it. The following questions were asked to all the subjects:
1. What is Beauty for you? Do you think it is truly quantitative or actually quantifiable? Give your own theory on Beauty.
2. Do you believe we humans have outgrown “Survival of the Fittest” when it comes to selecting partners?
3. Give 3 physical and 3 non-physical traits of the person/a person you find beautiful.

Teacher 1: (female, with companion) clue: knowledgeable in bio

Q1: Personally, subjective. Pwede naman kasing maganda yung tao, pero iba yung tingin, or iba yung preference. Parang depende kasi pano mo ba idedefine yung beauty?

Humans eh. (agrees that we humans are in a sense “one-step” higher than other animals.
Q3: Malinis ang katawan, medyo chubby siya eh malambot (huggable), maganda yung lips niya (physical). Sweet tapos malambing siya eh di ako malambing, anu siya, family oriented (non-physical).

Teacher 2: (male, no companion daw) clue: impatient

Q1: My theory? Uhm maybe it’s quantifiable. Kasi uhm there have been studies that they claim that it’s just about the symmetry of the face and the correct position of the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, cheeks. So ayun. Probably it is, perhaps. Or there is a general trend that they did prove that if you have this set of these features, that you are beautiful to most people. Well, I do believe that, probably. But it depends on what type of beauty you’re asking, kasi nga if it’s physical uhm probably that is uhm, quanti, pero oo it is still subjective pero I do believe that it is roughly quantifiable.

Q2: Survival of the fittest? It depends on what you mean by survival of the fittest. Physical traits only? Well, no well, hmm complex question. Only physical traits, well probably yes, kasi kasi ano, kung survival of the fittest ng physical characteristics eh di dapat kung beneficial na matangkad ang tao bakit meron paring mga maliliit na tao. I mean given the structure of our society now di naman physical characteristics lang yung nagmamatter eh. Depends, there’s already the fact of money, pero they do say that yung mga matatangkad na tao raw naglaland ng leadership jobs. Pero probably ha.

Q3: (random comments).

Student 1: (male, no companion) clue: mathboy

Q1: Theory ko uhm, ayun, quantifiable. (comments on how ugly a perfectly symmetrical face is). Mas trip ko exotic, pero no blondes! Why? Wala mas unique sila, (from own point of view).
Q2: Oo, kasi wala nang ibang mas mataas na hayop kaysa sa atin. I think that that game (survival of the fittest) is finished na!

Q3: mukhang kit, JOKE! Uh wala, matangkad, tapos yung goldilocks condition, just right not too big, not too enormous. Uhh, di siya skeletor (di siya kalansay). (non-physical) ano uh, friendly tapos uh parang optimistic tapos yung uhm mabagal din magalit.

Student 2: (male, with companion) clue: bubbles
Q1: uhm, feeling ko it’s subjective for me. Eh ayun, beauty depends on what we grow up with and what we perceive as beautiful. Or what we actually get used to. I think it’s pretty much the one we get used to (when asked which physical characteristics he preferred, new ones or old ones). Parang, ano eh, you’re gonna be forced on something new (for new). Pero syempre it also depends on what you want, what you think.

Q2: I think in some ways survival of the fittest parin, pero ano uhm, I don’t think we’ve outgrown it. Not necessarily that turn but it’s more of parang nag-iba yung perception natin. Nag-iba yung perception natin, instead of survival of the fittest, naging ano, parang we choose a certain type. Pero ano, yeah, I think you can still, well same concept pero iba na yung logic niya.

Q3: Hm, yung eyes niya diba, shape nung body and shape nung legs diba. Non physical? Way she laughs, way she smiles and well, way she moves.

Student 3: (female, with companion) clue: Double L

Q1: Quantifiable siya, kasi uhm parang yung man, may subconscious taste siya sa tao. Like sa girls for example, yung mga guys naaattract sila dahil sa waist hip ratio ng mga girls. Oo may subjective pero hindi subconsciously yung mga guys nasesense nila yung pheromones nung girls like how fertile they are so parang they’re attracted. Unless it’s a development thing, pero yeah pag first meeting usually ganun. Tapos meron pang something sa jawline thingy. Thesis namin to nung second year kaya alam ko. Ehehe

Q2: Hindi na survival of the fittest

Q3: deep brown eyes, mas matangkad sakin, pokable yung tiyan niya (physical). Lagi siya nandyan tapos napapatawa ako, tapos he plays basketball! (non-physical)

Student 4: (female, no companion) clue: I am

Q1: Beauty is uh, something that makes us attracted to one thing. something good and pleasant. I think that its qualitative and not quantifiable, I personally think that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" says enough already. I dunno like, I find more foreign guys attractive, though they’re all celebrities.

Q2: nope. because a lot of people still find guys with abs and muscular arms hot and attractive (i.e. taylor lautner)

Q3: physical: messy hair. cute smile. taller than me, non-physical - super nice. smart. fun to be around with

Analysis:

Q1:
It seems to many people, the idea that beauty is subjective is still more prevalent than all other theories. True, there have been studies involving the correlation of the measurements, ratio of parts, positioning and symmetry that give the “scientific estimate” of beauty but the fact remains that it is still mostly subjective. In a way the correct position and symmetry of parts provide the basis or the foundation for calling something beautiful, however the tiniest details such as color, shape, angle etc. give the defining characteristic of beauty. According to one subject, humans react to each other's pheromones which would mean that somehow, this concept of beauty is still heavily influenced by primal instincts and nature.

All the people I've asked agreed that the environment people grew up in heavily influences their definition of what is beautiful. For those who found natives more beautiful argued that this familiarity allowed them to like these features and get used to them, thus allowing acceptance. Those who argued that exotic features were better argued that the uniqueness of the appearance compared to their previous experience appealed to them greatly. In any other case, there does indeed seem to be a general preference for foreigners rather than own kind (among people I've asked).

Perhaps this can be attributed to man's purpose to reproduce with a varying gene pool, the more different, the more genetic variation. Or perhaps this is simply human mentality.

Q2:
Following the test subjects' answers, I can say that more people tend to believe that we humans do not follow survival of the fittest anymore. The most prevalent argument of this would be the presence of emotions and feelings which can overcome physical disabilities, physical preference and other characteristics involved in selection via survival of the fittest. True, handicapped people still get married even if they are deeemd to be unfit. In the animal kingdom, usually these weak ones will be unable to pass on their genes. The presence of many variations of both beneficial and non-beneficial traits prove that we humans do no strictly adhere to survival of the fittest. We are still however, influenced heavily by things such as pheromones, hormones and etc, proving that we are still bound by biological rules.
